Serafini began his career in the corporate sector, where he participated in marketing and sales contracts, patent litigation, acquisitions and general management, rising to the level of Vice President and of Patent Counsel. He also practiced law in the intellectual property prosecution and litigation department of the largest law firm in San Diego.
Serafini speaks English, Italian, French and German fluently. He is also conversational in Spanish.
Serafini is a member of the American Intellectual Property Association, where he is a member of the International Education Committee; the La Jolla bar Association, where he is a member of the Board of Directors; the Association Internationale pour la Protection de la Propriété Intellectuelle; the World Trade Center; the American Chemical Society; and the San Diego Intellectual Property Association. He has been published and quoted in numerous press articles.
Dr. Fortner began his scientific career in the academic environment, first as a Post-Doctorial Research Associate focusing on RNA’s transcription, structure, degradation and interactions with other RNAs, DNA and regulatory proteins. He became later a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of California, where he taught biochemistry and molecular biology lecturing on all major aspects of RNA processing.
During law school, Dr. Fortner served as an extern for the Honorable Rudi M. Brewster at the United States District Court for the Southern District of California. After graduation, he joined one of the largest U.S. law firms, working in the areas of intellectual property litigation and prosecution.
Dr. Fortner has authored numerous scientific and legal articles. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the San Diego Intellectual Property Association, and the San Diego County Bar Association.
